Elkhorn Slough Outdoor School

The mission of the Elkhorn Slough Outdoor School is to foster understanding of our natural world and inspire a sense of respect for our planet's fragile balancing acts.  This mission is accomplished by merging content standards from the California State Board of Education with hands on, real world experiences.  The Elkhorn Slough Outdoor School boast quality curriculum that was designed by a collaboration of teachers, naturalists and local researchers. 

Teachers can mix and match two half day themes from a variety of choices including--

On the Water by Kayak Trips
  • Kayak The Elkhorn Slough: students explore the ecosystems of the Elkhorn Slough
  • Marine Mammals of Monterey: students learn about otters and harbor seals and the factors that affect them
  • Birds!: this trip discovers the migratory bird population of the slough with a focus on feeding and ornithology
  • Farming Around an Estuary: students learn about how the largest agricultural economy in America affects the slough and their own life.
Dune Hiking Trips
  • Hike the Monterey Dunes: learn about endangered plant life and bird species while tiptoeing the dunes of Moss Landing
  • Geology of the Dunes: explore topics including beach and dune formation, tides, water cycle and plate tectonics
  • Giants of the Sea: learn how humpbacks, grey whales and orcas that call the Monterey Bay home are affected by humans on land
  • It's Electricity: learn how the natural gas power plant of Moss Landing works and how we can save electricity

Cost: $25.00 for half day trips and $45.00 for full day trips
