Sea Kayaking Class Progression

Paddling is a fantastic way to explore the ocean, view wildlife, and go on an adventure. Stepping outside your comfort zone can be intimidating, and it can be challenging to know where and how to begin. Our instructional program will cover the skills necessary to be safe and have fun on the water. Below is our class progression, which explains how you can start as a novice and develop into the paddler you want to become. The best place to begin is with our Coastal Sea Kayaking Series.

The CSK curriculum covers the basics of how to be comfortable in a kayak, maneuver your boat effectively, and introduces the fundamental kayak rescues for solo and group paddling.

You also have the option of signing up for Sea Kayak Club, a five week series that covers the CSK program. It’s a great way to immerse yourself into the paddling world and make new kayaking friends along the way!

Once you have completed CSK 1-3, there are several different avenues you can pursue. What type of paddler do you want to become? Whether you want to paddle for fitness, tour the coast, or play in the dynamic waters of the surf zone and rock gardens, we offer intermediate to advanced courses that accommodate your focus.

The Progression and Exploration Series, Surf Zone Program, and the Advanced Open Water Program focus on different aspects of paddling and offer you the ability to customize your personal paddling development plan.

Our Progression and Exploration Series is designed for novice and intermediate paddlers to gain real world experience. You will go on a classic Monterey Bay paddle and receive personalized coaching on the move. Each module has its own theme and is intended to bolster your coastal paddling skills and knowledge.

The modules The Surf Zone Program encompasses several courses and is suitable for paddlers of all skill levels seeking to become more comfortable in waves. From introductory to advanced surfing courses, we have coaches ready to help you achieve your goals.

There is no strict order that you must follow when signing up for our courses, although prior experience will be necessary for the more advanced classes.

We are happy to work with you and recommend a course based on your goals and interests. For a more visual representation of how our instructional programs are structured and overlap with each other, please see the diagram below:
