The temperatures are starting to cool down, the leaves are changing colors, and the feel of fall is in the air.

Fortunately for paddling enthusiasts, there’s no better time to experience the beauty of California’s Central Coast!

Here at Kayak Connection, we love kayaking in the autumn months and look forward to sharing the experience with as many people as possible.

In this blog, we’ll offer our top tips for paddling in the fall, discuss the best kayaking spots, and help you learn how to make the most of your kayaking adventure.

What’s so Special About Kayaking in the Fall?

If you haven’t tried kayaking in California during the fall, you’re missing out!

Here’s why this season is truly special for paddlers:

  • Beautiful Weather: Fall on the Central Coast means a “Second Summer” of warm, clear days and crisp cool nights.  The fog of August has burned off and afternoon winds have calmed, making it ideal for a day on the water. Say goodbye to the June gloom and enjoy gorgeous, tranquil days on the water.
  • Fewer Crowds: As summer draws to a close, the peak-season crowds disperse, as well. Kayaking in the fall means quiet waters and plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the natural landscape.
  • Magical Mornings: During fall in California, the fog by the coast is greatly reduced, revealing breathtaking views of the coastline and mountains—perfect for capturing amazing photos!
  • Wildlife Watching: Fall is a great time to catch glimpses of migrating seabirds coming to feast on booming schools of anchovy. As you paddle along, keep an eye out for pelicans, terns, shearwaters and dozens of other species of birds, often in flocks of thousands.

Best Places in California to Go Kayaking in Autumn

Elkhorn Slough is a beautiful seven-mile estuary on California’s central coast. The area is famous for its diverse wildlife, calm waters, and biological importance.

The Slough is a great spot for paddlers who want a scenic, calm paddle that allows them to enjoy nature, with chances to see sea otters, harbor seals, and hundreds of species of native and migratory birds.

Our team offers Elkhorn Slough Wildlife Tours and Sunset Wildlife Tours for paddlers who want to learn more about this area with experienced naturalist guides.  We also offer year round rentals in both locations for those who prefer to go on a self-guided paddle.

Best For:

  • Beginner Kayakers: Elkhorn Slough’s gentle waters and sheltered routes make it a fantastic choice for beginners.
  • Birders: The Slough is home to a wide array of migratory seabirds, and the fall is a great time to take one of our Bird-Watching Kayak Tours.

4. Morro Bay

Morro Bay is famous for its stunning natural beauty, highlighted by the iconic Morro Rock.

This estuary is home to various wildlife, like herons, egrets, and different fish species.

The calm waters provide a peaceful paddling experience, especially in the fall when conditions are clear and serene.

How to Prepare for Fall Kayaking

Getting ready for a fall kayaking adventure?

The key to having a great time is planning well and prioritizing safety.

Here are a few of our top tips:

What to Wear

  • Layer Your Clothing: The weather along the Central Coast is variable during the fall. Mornings are usually cool with temperatures increasing by midday. With that in mind, dress in layers that you can add or remove as needed. Start with moisture-wicking base layers and bring insulative mid-layers along with a wind and water resistant outer layer just in case.  You can make a final determination just prior to getting on the water after reviewing the day’s conditions.
  • Footwear: We recommend water shoes or sandals that you won’t mind getting wet.  Keep in mind the terrain of your launch and landing point, along with any beaches or rocky shores you may land on for a break during your paddle when choosing footwear.  A simple dock launch may only require a pair of flip flops, while a difficult and rocky entry will call for more specialized footwear.
  • Accessories: Remember to wear a hat and sunglasses and apply SPF before you head out. I always like to bring along some water and a light snack if I’m on the water for more than an hour or so.

Equipment to Bring

  • Kayak: Make sure the kayak you’re using is suitable for the waters you’ll be paddling.  You wouldn’t want to take a recreational kayak along the Big Sur Coast or a whitewater boat out on the Elkhorn Slough, right? Not sure what you need? Our team can help you find the right kayak and ensure it fits you correctly before you begin your adventure.
  • Safety Gear: Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) that is comfortable and fits properly (our team can help you find the right one before you head out on the water).
  • Safety Kit: In addition to your basic kayaking gear, we recommend packing a first aid kit, a VHF radio, boat repair kit, a whistle, and a dry bag to contain your valuables. If you’re headed out on one of our tours, you can count on your guide to carry many of these items – so be sure to ask what (if anything) you need to bring.

General Tips

  • Check the Conditions: Before you head out, ALWAYS check local weather, swell, tide, and marine forecasts and adjust your plans accordingly.  The last thing you want is to find yourself fighting a strong flooding tide and stout headwinds on your way home when you’re worn out from a long day on the water.
  • Stay Hydrated and Fueled: Bring enough food and water to feed your body for the length of your trip. If the weather is going to be chilly, consider bringing some hot cocoa or tea in a thermos to keep you warm.
  • Know Your Limits: Know your skill level and pick a route that suits your experience. It’s best to paddle in beginner-friendly areas (like the sheltered waters of Elkhorn Slough) until you gain confidence and expertise.
  • Take a Buddy and File a Floatplan: It’s always safer to paddle with a friend, especially if your plans are taking you far from easy access to help.  It’s also important to let someone staying on land know your floatplan and when to expect you back so they can call for help if they don’t hear from you at the expected time.
