There is something about a summer evening on the Monterey Bay that you just cannot get any other time of day.
The afternoon wind settles down, the water goes calm, and everything turns gold as the sun drops toward the horizon. If you have only ever paddled in the morning, an evening trip is a completely different experience, and in summer it might be the best few hours you spend on the water all year.
At Kayak Connection, we have been guiding paddlers around the Monterey Bay for over 30 years, and our sunset tours at both the Santa Cruz Harbor and Elkhorn Slough are some of the first things to book up every summer. Here is why evening paddling is so good in June, July, and August, and how to make the most of it at each location.
Why Summer Evenings Are Made for Paddling
Long days are the whole reason this works. Around the summer solstice in late June, the sun does not set in Santa Cruz until close to 8:30 PM, which leaves plenty of daylight for an evening trip out on the water.
A few things come together to make summer evenings special on the water:
The wind calms down. Afternoon breezes on the bay tend to ease off as the sun gets lower, so the water often goes flat and smooth in the evening. That makes for relaxed, easy paddling.
The light is incredible. As the sun drops, the sky over the bay shifts through pink, orange, and gold. Watching it from the water, with the Santa Cruz hills behind you, is hard to beat.
It is calm and quieter. The boardwalk crowds thin out and the water settles down. An evening paddle is a peaceful way to cap off a busy summer day.
Wildlife is still active. Sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, herons, and pelicans are all out in the evening hours. You get the same rich wildlife the bay is known for, just with better light for watching and photographing it.
One of the Best Things About Evenings: The Wildlife Changes
Here is something a lot of paddlers do not realize. The animals behave differently in the evening than they do during the day, and that is a big part of what makes a sunset trip so special.
As the sun gets low, the sea birds come back to roost. The shoreline and the marsh fill up with California brown pelicans, great blue herons, and egrets returning for the night, so the evening can be packed with birds in a way the middle of the day rarely is. For birdwatchers and photographers, it is one of the best shows on the water.

Sea otters get interesting in the evening too. Most of the day you see them floating on their backs in the kelp, but around sunset you may catch them hauled out on the beach. Seeing an otter on land is a whole different experience. You really appreciate just how big they are when they are out of the water. Fun fact: when they move on land, they run like little bears.
Harbor seals put on a show in the evening as well. During the day they tend to be big, lazy blobs basking on the rocks and the banks, but as the light fades they get curious and active. It is not unusual for a seal to swim right up to a group of paddlers and start circling around, popping its head up to check everyone out. Those friendly, inquisitive encounters are one of the things our guests remember most.
Evening light makes all of it even better. The low sun brings out color and detail you just do not get in the middle of the day, so bring a camera or a waterproof phone case.
Sunset Tours at Elkhorn Slough (Moss Landing)
Our Elkhorn Slough sunset tours in Moss Landing are a favorite for exactly this reason. The slough is a protected estuary with calm, sheltered water, which makes it relaxed and easy to paddle, and the wildlife at golden hour is hard to beat.

This is where you are most likely to see otters hauled out on the beach and the sky filling with pelicans, herons, and egrets coming in to roost. With a naturalist guide along to point things out and share what is happening, an evening on the slough is part paddle, part front-row wildlife seat.
It is a great fit for families, first-time paddlers, and anyone who loves wildlife and photography. Note that the slough is kayak-only, so this is a paddle you will enjoy from the seat of a stable, easy-to-handle kayak.
Sunset Tours at the Santa Cruz Harbor
Over at the Santa Cruz Harbor, the Sunset Kayak Tour launches during golden hour and paddles out toward the open water of the Monterey Bay. You glide through calm evening water, watch the sun set over the bay, and keep an eye out for sea otters in the kelp, harbor seals and sea lions on the jetty, and the pelicans and herons working the shoreline. Humpback whales and dolphins feed in the bay through the summer and sometimes surface within view as well.

It is a great fit for couples looking for a date-night adventure, families wanting something memorable, or anyone who just wants to slow down and enjoy the bay at its prettiest.
At both locations our guides are CPR certified, many hold Wilderness First Responder certifications, and they know these waters inside and out, so it is comfortable even if you have never been in a kayak before. Because evening trips depend on the sunset, spots are limited and they fill up fast in summer. We recommend booking at least a few days ahead, and earlier if you have a group or a specific date in mind.
Tips for a Great Evening on the Water
A little planning goes a long way toward making your sunset paddle as good as it can be:
Bring layers. The coast can get downright cold once the sun gets low, so pack a warm layer and a windbreaker no matter how nice the afternoon was. You will be glad to have them on the paddle back in.
Check your timing. Plan around sunset so you are on the water for the best of the light. If you are renting on your own rather than joining the guided tour, give yourself enough time to get out, enjoy the sunset, and return before dark.
Pack water and a snack. Paddling is a workout, and it is easy to forget to eat and drink when you are watching the sky. Bring both along.
Protect your gear. A waterproof phone case or a dry bag keeps your phone and keys safe and dry, and lets you grab photos of the sunset without worrying.
Wear and bring sun protection. Even in the evening, the sun off the water is strong. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are still worth having early in the trip.
Make It a Full Santa Cruz Evening
A sunset paddle pairs perfectly with everything else the area has to offer. Before your trip, grab fish tacos or fresh seafood near the harbor. Afterward, take a stroll along the water as the lights come on, or head into downtown Santa Cruz for dinner and dessert.
If you are visiting for a weekend, you can pair an evening paddle in Santa Cruz with a morning kayak trip at Elkhorn Slough in nearby Moss Landing, where calm, sheltered water and abundant wildlife make for a relaxed start to the day. Two very different sides of the Monterey Bay, one great weekend.
